Variables in C language

Variable Definition : –

                      A Variable is defined as a meaningful name given to the data storage location in computer memory.

C language supports two types :-

  1. Numeric variables
  2. Character Variables

Numeric Variables : –

                    Numeric Variables can be used to store either integer  values ( or ) floating point values. Numeric variables may also be associated with modifiers such as short , long, signed and unsigned.

Character Variables :-

                  Character Variables can include any letter from the alphabet (or) from the ASCII chart and numbers 0-9 that are given in the single quotes.

Declaring Variables :-

                 Each variable to be used in this program must be declared. To declare a variable, specify the data type of the variable followed by its name.

syntax:-

                 data type var1, var2, var3,…………..varn ;

examples :-

               int count;

               Float salary;

               char grade;

               int a,b,c;

Initializing Variables :-

           Values can be assigned to variables using the assignment Operator ( = ) as follows. While declaring the variables, we can also initialize them with some value.

syntax :-

            data type variable_name =value;

example :-

          int count =0;

         float salary = 50000 ;

          char grade  = ‘s’ ;

          int a=10, b=5, c=1 ;

In C variables are declare three basic places :-

  • When a variable is declared inside  a function then it is known as ” local variable “
  • When a variable is declared in the definition then it is known as  ” function parameters “
  • When the variable is declared outside all functions the it is known as ” global variables “.
